6 wishes for 6 years of Silly McWiggles (because it’s my birthday, too)

Another year around the sun, as they say.

Another year of curating the channels under the Silly McWiggles umbrella, too.

And not that you asked, but here’s a little breakdown of what’s hot and what’s not in my blogging world. Just because I can.

The day I publish this post will be my actual birthday. So I thought I’d share something a little more personal on this special occasion.

Let’s go back to last year’s post with 5 wishes for 5 years of Silly McWiggles. If you’ve ever wondered why I do what I do, you’ll find some answers there. It’s also a good place to see how I’m doing on making all those plans a reality.

This is probably where you’d expect me to pat myself on the back. Not quite. Referencing Tkay Maidza‘s EP trilogy from 2019-2021, “Last Year Was Weird”.

On the one hand, I met a bunch of peeps from the Aussie music biz (including some of my fave artists, like the hip-hop group 3%) at numerous festivals, industry events and networking gatherings. I was also approached about some cool projects. Interesting collabs came out of that, amongst them the chat with Kathy Wilson from Suitcase Records.

But being a creator is not a bed of roses. As often happens, plans fell through, opportunities were missed, and my requests for interviews most likely landed in the recipients’ spam folders. So I ended up being less present on my socials and publishing less on my channels, in general.

To sum up, I’ve come to terms with my failed mission from 2024. I still haven’t interviewed DMA’S, attended BIGSOUND or the ARIAs, scored a gig at an Aussie publication, organised a mini festival with Aussie acts or got my ‘Silly Talks Music’ podcast on a Spotify ranking.

On the other hand, maybe a year is simply not enough time to turn those ambitious plans into reality if you’re flying solo?

So I’m rolling over those dreams to 2025. And because I can’t ever sit still, I’ve come up with a new wish to bring the total to six, matching the number of years I’ve been running the Silly McWiggles project.

A friend recently told me I should produce more video content because “nobody reads things anymore.” Even though it hurt my blogging feelings a little, I know she’s right.

So I’ve set myself a challenge. In 2025, I’ll try to focus on doing more clips with music reviews. Because it turns out that talking about music on camera is not such a bad thing, after all.

And on that note, happy birthday to me! I’ll see you back here in mid-May next year to see if I’ve delivered.

P.S. I always accept virtual gifts in the form of songs, playlists and names of cool, emerging bands, especially from Australia. You know how to find me.

Processing…
Success! You're on the list.

“I like to call myself a student of rap” – Western Sydney-based artist DEVAURA inaugurates Season 6 of the ‘Silly Talks Music’ podcast

Here’s something that might shock you, dear readers. I’m probably the last person you should ask anything about rap and hip-hop, for various reasons. Yet, I frequently find myself approached by emerging artists in that space with requests to review their releases. After checking my playlists and posts on this blog, it also dawned on…

My radio hosting gig at Cultural Popcorn is ending (for now). Melbourne art-rock band Peak Park helped me bid farewell to it in style

If you ever ask me about my biggest dreams in the music world, I’ll always list three things. They are chatting with artists, having my show on the radio, and running an independent record label/management company. While the latter is still awaiting its turn, I’ve been very fortunate with the other two. I partially owe…
